Do conservatory roof blinds work?

If your conservatory is too hot to use in the summer, roof blinds will help keep the temperature down over the course of the day. However, they are not a perfect solution because they have no insulating properties, and only reflect sunlight back. This means they do not help keep a room cool when it gets there.

Likewise, if your conservatory is sometimes unusable in the winter because of glare, roof blinds will help eliminate glare. This will make the room more usable for sitting and reading, but the blinds only work so well. Again, they also have no insulating properties but block the sun, so you might find your conservatory too cold to use in the winter.

For a winter or summer application, then, conservatory roof blinds work to a degree but aren’t a perfect solution for regulating temperature or reducing glare. The best solution is a more expensive but permanent one – a solid roof.

The permanent solution is a solid roof

Upgrading your existing conservatory roof, be it made from glass, polycarbonate or fibreglass is possible with the Leka conservatory warm roof replacement System. This replaces your roof with a solid tiled roof that is lightweight and suitable for most conservatory builds.

The best part is the roofing system is modular and configurable to suit your individual needs, so you can integrate roof windows into the design. Depending on your build, it may be possible to have a roof lantern just like an orangery.

The Leka Roofing System outperforms and outlasts common fibreglass and polycarbonate roofing systems. It completely replaces your existing roofing system, and in doing so, takes away the annoyance of a glazed roof. That means no more unbearable heat in summer and no more glare in winter. The best of both worlds.

Comparing a solid conservatory roof to roof blinds

Roof blinds in comparison are a temporary solution to your problem. If your conservatory is too hot to use in the summer, blinds will reflect sunlight to keep direct heat out, but the room will still heat up residually. The Leka System is a fully insulated solid roof with Celotex insulation, a market-leading product. This keeps your room warm or cool for the season and unlike a set of blinds doesn’t need fettling with.

Similarly, roof blinds can’t reduce glare as well as our solid roofing system. So-called ‘black-out’ blinds are the nearest thing, but these are ugly, intrusive and a temporary solution to your problem. The Leka System eliminates glare entirely and the roof window can be strategically placed so it does not interfere with visibility during the day. Your engineer will take into account the sun’s movement to ensure this.

So, do conservatory roof blinds work? Not to any great extent. They don’t insulate, and they don’t eliminate glare entirely. Upgrading your glazed, fibreglass or polycarbonate conservatory roof with a solid roofing system is the permanent solution to your problem and it is more cost-effective than you’d think. Best of all, you can match your new roof to your home with Tapco slate or Metrotile concrete tiles.
